Overview
PROJECT DANCE envisions the day when every dancer is nurtured to their fullest human potential for their own wellbeing and their contribution to our world. Our mission is to bring hope and healing to culture through the universal language of dance.
Since the Foundation’s inception in 1996 and its incorporation in 2003, it has thrived as a 100% volunteer organization that serves more than 800 dancers worldwide through its events, classes and performances. However, to sustain the growth of the organization and manage the growing number of volunteers, a paid staff is now needed.
The Foundation is not a re-granting organization but is one that has four signature programs:
PROJECT DANCE EVENTS This three day weekend event gathers professional, pre-professional and aspiring dancers for training and performances. This program serves 800 dancers annually, utilizing more than 70 volunteer dance teachers throughout the events. Teachers include members of the Rockettes, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, The New York City Ballet, and the Broadway stage. Events are held in Times Square, New York; Atlanta, Georgia; Sydney, Australia, and Hong Kong, China. The final performance of each event takes place outdoors and is free to the public.
BROADWAY UNDERGROUND A 90-minute urban variety show, is performed monthly at BB Kings Blues Club and Grill on 42nd Street and Broadway. It serves as a platform for talented New York community artists to both hone and showcase their skills. One thousand artists have participated in the show and 1,800 supporters have viewed this ticketed show in its brief two-year history. www.broadwayunderground.org
ATMOSPHERE Project Dance’s New York City dance company, Atmosphere, has a roster of 46 dancers, who attend weekly classes to rehearse, and perform in New York. This company is not commissioned; dancers serve the local community by using their talents to bring relief to and awareness of social injustice issues including economically disadvantaged youth. Atmosphere members choreograph, teach and produce all dances performed. Recent performances include The Broadway Blessing at St. John the Divine, NYC; House of the Roses Benefit, NYC; The Christmas Banquet at Paula White Ministries, NYC.
THE PROJECT DANCE STUDIO A variety of dance classes and workshops, including tap, ballet, modern, hip-hop, musical theatre, and Pilates take place in our Studio in New York City. The Dance Studio program serves 200 dancers taught by over 20 dance instructors throughout our season
